CEREC Crowns Compared to Other Restorations
More dentists are using CEREC® same-day crowns as a tooth-restoration method. If you have a damaged or severely decayed tooth, this treatment could be just what you need. There are benefits and advantages to choosing this method over other options. It is useful to understand how the process works and how it is different than other treatments. You can revive your smile and restore the full function of your mouth with these crowns.
Why people need tooth restoration
Teeth are meant to last a lifetime. However, some issues can damage, dislodge, or cause decay and infections in teeth. Perhaps the most common problem comes from a lack of good oral hygiene. Failing to brush and floss properly can cause a buildup of bacteria, leading to cavities or abscessed teeth. These conditions can make a tooth crack or deteriorate. Accidents and injuries can also knock out or break teeth.
How CEREC crowns work
These crowns are similar to traditional crowns, except the dentist can make them in the office during a single patient visit. The dentist starts by taking 3D images of the patient’s mouth. Using computer technology, this information goes to a software system, which creates a model for the crown. A milling unit takes the model and makes the crown out of a ceramic block.
Meanwhile, the dentist numbs the patient until they are comfortable and will not feel pain. The dentist shaves the tooth and reshapes it so that the cap will fit. The dentist checks the fit to make sure it is correct. The dentist cements the crown in place and uses light to cure it, hardening it quickly. The crown is the same size, shape, and color as a natural tooth.
Traditional crowns
Crowns protect a cracked or broken tooth from suffering further damage. It stabilizes the tooth and can also prevent decay or infections. The dentist may place a crown over a tooth that had root canal treatment. Crowns allow the individual to chew normally again and have a natural-looking smile. Unlike CEREC crowns, a traditional cap takes a few weeks to make. The dentist follows the same process but will put a temporary cap over the affected tooth until the permanent one is ready.
Veneers
While a CEREC crown fits completely over the tooth, a veneer attaches to the front of it. A veneer is a thin shell that can restore the proper shape or desired color of an affected tooth. It is also a good option for people who have a chipped tooth. To place a veneer over a tooth, the dentist must remove some enamel and etch the tooth. This makes it rough and more effective for bonding. Veneers are usually made of porcelain.
Make the right choice so you can enjoy your smile again
CEREC crowns make sense for people who have damaged teeth and want to restore their smile. If you are unhappy with the way your teeth look, talk to your dentist. You may be a good candidate for same-day crowns. You can also consider other options and decide which one makes the most sense to you.
